имало едно време в началото на 90те,в най-дълбокия ъндърграунд на LA крю, наречено unity committee. kрю, достатъчно силно за да роди други два проекта - jurasic 5 и darkleaf. oще в началото, darkleaf, съставено от емситата kemit и metalogik, продуцентите и емсита longjevity и jahli, както и mixmaster wolf (dj и водещ вокал в на breakestra) се стремят да бъдат сред най-мрачните листа на дървото на ъндърграунд формациите в LA, бягащи от клишетата и безвкусицата на мейнстрийм хип-хопа. вдъхновени от sun ra, chick corea, и jimi hendrix, звукът на darkleaf е вкусна гозба от олдскул public enemy, насечени ритми и споукън уърд. записват с имена като P.E.A.C.E. от freestyle fellowship, st mark от brothers manifesto, замесени са са в ежеседмичния root down live/dj session и продуцират парчета за документалната лентата на kevin fitzgerald "Freestyle", показанa на независимия филмов фестивал в LA.
